This manuscript map from the Zurich Central Library is a cosmological map that reflects the worldview of the Dayak people of Borneo. The dragon lies beneath the Earth’s surface and symbolizes femininity. The entire map conveys a holistic view of the human life cycle. It should be understood as a “Map of Life,” rooted in indigenous beliefs. The map also serves to convey traditional values to Christians. It offers a general view of the “Map of Life” without limiting itself to a geographically or topographically defined space. The map is characterized by a certain continuum between different worlds (“upper world”/this world). The same applies to everyday customs: If the Dayak (excessively) cut down trees in this world, then no trees will be found in the “upper world” either. This is meant as a warning against harming Mother Earth’s nature. The map was likely created under the guidance of the Dayak. It may have been drawn by a missionary.
