Salamanca Map of Switzerland
Antonio Salamanca created the first north-oriented map of Switzerland. In 1555, it was engraved on copper—the first Swiss map to be engraved in this manner—and published in Rome with a dedication to Jost von Meggen, commander of the Swiss Guard. The only known copies to date are held by the University Library of Basel and the Swiss National Library. The Zurich Central Library recently acquired another copy of this extremely rare map at an auction held by Hartung & Hartung (Munich). The Salamanca Map was re-engraved in Venice in 1563 and 1567 by Paolo Forlani and, following that, in 1566 by Domenico Zenoni (Zenoi), as well as in Antwerp in 1578 (with a further edition in 1593) by Gerard de Jode (Helvetiae seu Suiciae).
