One Becomes Two—Cheers! With a globe? No, with a globe trophy! The specimen pictured has been owned by the Zurich Learned Society since 1673 and is on loan to the Swiss National Museum. It is made of silver and is exquisitely gilded, chased, and engraved. Atlas balances the globe on his head, atop which a stand supports a small celestial sphere. The highlight of the whole piece: If you remove the celestial sphere and split the globe along the equator, you end up with two cups. In the past, on the anniversary of Charlemagne’s death, fine wines were passed around in these cups in his honor and tasted by every member of the gathering present. Of course, this custom was spontaneously discontinued in the mid-20th century when it became known that the National Museum cleans its gold and silver with cyanide…
