Because the spectacular first ascent of the Matterhorn—and, at the same time, Zermatt’s first mountaineering tragedy—on July 14 marked its 150th anniversary, this event was chosen as the theme of this issue. At the same time, this provides the Swiss Society for Cartography with an opportunity to present a publication on the history of cartography during the International Year of the Map.
