Sensational Discovery of a Key Work on Swiss Cartographic History

As part of Madlena Cavelti Hammer’s project “Cartography of Central Switzerland,” a map manuscript was found in the archives of the Obwalden Historical Museum. Martin Uebelhart first reported on this discovery in the “Zentralschweiz am Sonntag” on February 15, 2015, page 16:

Dr. Martin Rickenbacher was consulted in December 2014 to provide an expert assessment of the find. The cartographic historian placed the manuscript map in the context of the creation of Müller’s Relief of the Swiss Alps and the “Atlas Suisse” (1796–1802). His preliminary assessment of the map’s boundaries and his initial evaluation of this map are published here for the first time:
